World Book Day study

The campaign uses results from a World Book Day study, which found only 2% of boooks written about in GCSE exams are books written by women, which perpetuates the dominant white male narrative. Women characters were either victims or servants in the commonly used books during GCSE exams, which perpetuates harmful beliefs that women are inferior. This denys female character's complexity, agency or character development. Girls need to be able to see themselves as capable, brave, clever, heroic and equal to men, so this campaign has encouraged diversification of the school curriculum to include voices from women, in particular women of colour or from minority backgrounds.
