The horrific crime took place on a moving bus, which drove around the city for an hour while the men carried out the savage assault using an iron rod. They dumped Jyoti Sign and her friend on a road, naked and bleeding. Jyoti died of her injuries and her death sparked massive street protests against misogyny and gendered violence in India. In particular, the justice system's failure towards rape victims was protested against across the world and the men were later found guilty and hanged.
