Role of cities in empowering women: from park safety to statues of women

1 in 3 women can't access safe, inclusive toilets. 51% of women in Hawassa, Ethiopia have faced violence on public transport

Naming streets after men and creating statues of men reinforce the achievements of men, at the expense of women. Research has shown that women are discouraged from persuing interests in STEM subjects when the representation is overwhelmingly male, despite many women having made STEM advances. This campaign aims to equalise women's presence in public spaces through more equitable representation. Safety is also key, as women have significantly fewer public toilets and more often use public transport.
