Community conversation
In Colombia, women involved in the coca economy experience a degree of empowerment that leads to increased income and decision-making power. Research found that illicit crop economies in war contexts can be a source of social advancement for marginalized populations, particularly women. Peace policies that do not recognise these advances in their design, deepen gender-based inequalities. This peace agreement used a gender perspective to enable increased properisty in the local community, which supports a growing body of campaigns and research that suggest peace agreements are more likely to last and are less superficial when women are involved and their priorities are incorporated into discussions.
