Mongolia's reverse gender gap

reverse gender gap

Too smart, too successful: Mongolia’s superwomen struggle to find husbands. Highly educated women far outnumber men in the capital – making it difficult for them to find a partner. Women are now more educated than men but still lag behind in other metrics and legal rights. We have no time for feminism, we need gender equality!", a young Mongolian explained. The streets of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, are influenced by three cultural characteristics: the old nomadic tradition, the socialism of the past, and the young democratisation movement. Young girls are taught they should succeed, then you succeed and there’s no equal partner for you. The social pressure is for you to get married but finding an equal partner is very hard. To attract men, women often lower their standards or pretend to be less educated or capable than they are. This shows that gender norms persist, even when women are ssen as capable.
