Community conversation
The Jeju Haenyeo practice has contributed to the advancement of women's status in the community and has been recognised and protected by UNESCO (in 2016) as an important aspect of cultural heritage. Social media campaigns have raised awareness of the contribution made by women to the culture and heritage. It is a skilled role, which involves diving without any breathing equipment. The women of Jeju Island in South Korea use traditional fishing methods, which have been passed down for generations. They harvest seafood from the ocean and they have managed to maintain these traditional techniques to contribute to their community's economy and culture.
